Unforgettable Moments on the Field: A Journey of Joy and Inclusion in the Harris County Little League Softball Challenger Division

May 16, 2023 ● By Richard Holdridge

The Harris County Little League Softball Challenger Co-ed division has successfully concluded its regular season. The season finale took place at Moultrie Park, the home of Harris County Little League, with six other games played at Pate Park in Ellerslie.

The Challenger League featured players with special needs, including several wheelchair participants. Parents assisted in the field, while coaches ensured accommodations were met for each player when they came up to bat.

"It is a very special league where these kids get to do something they've never done before," said Emily Banks, head coach of one of the Challenger teams. "They can play and be themselves, and we adapt to their needs."

The season kicked off on April 15th with a game between the two teams. It provided a unique experience for these kids, who enjoyed a walk-up song when coming to the plate and were cheered on by fans. Although the game outcomes didn't matter, each participant was a true winner, and the league hopes to grow in the future.

"I love it, and I hope to continue doing it. I hope to see it grow," expressed Emily Banks. "I'm hoping this spreads the word."

During the games, parents pitched to the players, and they also had the option to hit off the "T." The league followed all the rules of softball, and the last game at Moultrie Park had a fantastic turnout, with enthusiastic fans cheering for every play and at-bat. For most of these kids, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience they'll never forget.

"We had two teams this year, but I'd like to have at least four teams next year so we can have more games and involve more players," stated Smith, one of the league organizers. "Because this is for the kids, I want them to be a part of it. I know there are children out there who would love to be a part of it but just don't know about it."

The Challenger League also welcomed participants from Muscogee and surrounding counties, and it is open to all ages with special needs.

"This means the world to parents," shared Kim Pate, a parent and volunteer. "We don't have many opportunities to celebrate our kids and their differences."

This was the league's first year with a full season. Last year, they only played one game, but they aim to continue growing and increase the number of teams and games.

"It was such a hit last year that we decided we needed to keep growing," added Kim Pate. "It's not about competition; it's all about having fun."

The season concluded with a banquet held at the Bobby Lowman Recreation Center in Waverly Hall, GA, on May 9th. Chick-Fil-A catered the event, which featured a slide show highlighting pictures and videos from the players' season. Awards were also presented at the end.
