Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Heritage

Jun 19, 2024 ● By Desi Phillips

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, holds a special place in American history. It marks the moment when enslaved African Americans in Texas received news of their freedom. Here’s how it unfolded:

Back in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all enslaved people in Confederate-held territory were to be set free. However, this proclamation had limited immediate impact in Texas, which remained under Confederate control.

Fast forward to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, accompanied by federal troops. Granger read aloud General Order No. 3, officially informing enslaved individuals in Texas that they were free. This pivotal event marked the true end of slavery in the state.

Juneteenth Celebrations:

The African American community in Texas embraced June 19th as their emancipation day, affectionately calling it “Juneteenth.” These celebrations were filled with prayer, feasting, music, and heartfelt reunions. Families came together, and communities reflected on their newfound freedom.

Juneteenth embodies resilience, hope, and the ongoing struggle for equality. It serves as a poignant reminder of our shared history—a history that includes both progress and challenges.
