LifeSouth Community Blood Centers Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and encouraging the community to donate blood in support of those battling breast cancer and in honor of survivors. Donors will receive a limited-edition Breast Cancer Awareness Month long-sleeve t-shirt while supplies last.
Transfusions of blood products are often needed during cancer treatment. Approximately 30 percent of all blood transfusions in the U.S. go to cancer patients, who may require them to replace crucial elements of their blood that are damaged or lost during treatment. Patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, or those with cancers that affect the blood often need transfusions. Thousands of lives are saved every day thanks to blood donors.
LifeSouth supplies blood to regional hospitals, including St. Francis-Emory Healthcare. Blood donated with LifeSouth directly helps patients at these hospitals. LifeSouth invites the community to donate blood and give someone in need a chance at life. Cancer patients in local hospitals are counting on lifesaving blood donors in their community to ensure blood is there when needed. LifeSouth’s Columbus donor center is located at 5550 Whittlesey Blvd., Suite 820, next to Kirkland's and TJ Maxx. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Organizations, businesses, schools, and churches are encouraged to host blood drives with LifeSouth. Blood drives are needed every day to ensure blood is available for patients in need. Hosting a blood drive is a meaningful way to give back to the community.
All donors receive a mini-physical, including checks for blood pressure, temperature, iron level, and cholesterol. For additional information about donating or to find a blood drive near you, call LifeSouth toll-free at 888-795-2707, visit www.lifesouth.org, or download the LifeSouth app. Appointments can also be made online. Donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health.
