Springer Opera House Honors Indigenous Peoples with Two Groundbreaking Productions

Feb 06, 2025 ● By Jhai Jameson

The Springer Opera House continues its commitment to recognizing and honoring Indigenous peoples with two original productions this season: The Mvskoke Project, a world premiere commissioned by the Springer, and On the Far End, a powerful one-woman show about an Indigenous rights activist and attorney.

Both productions spotlight the rich history, cultural traditions, and lasting legacy of the Mvskoke (Creek) Nation, whose ancestral lands include Columbus and the surrounding region.

The Mvskoke Project: A World Premiere

A groundbreaking production commissioned by the Springer Opera House, The Mvskoke Project explores the history, resilience, and enduring spirit of the Mvskoke (Creek) Nation. This immersive play highlights the lives and stories of Indigenous peoples who lived in the southeastern United States before European colonization, particularly those in the Columbus region.

Written by playwright Eri Nox, the production blends oral traditions, historical accounts, and contemporary narratives to honor the Mvskoke people's deep connection to their land. With immersive storytelling, music, and visuals inspired by Mvskoke art and culture, the play fosters a deeper appreciation for their rich heritage and survival through displacement.

On the Far End: A Story of Resilience

On the Far End is a deeply moving one-woman show that traces the life and activism of Mvskoke leader Ella Jean Hill. Through a personal and historical lens, the play follows her family’s journey from the Trail of Tears to her grandfather’s land allotment in Oklahoma, and the pivotal moments that shaped her life.

Hill recounts her escape from a Native boarding school, her marriage to a Bengali scholar, and the advocacy that became her life’s work. The title, On the Far End, refers to the landmark 2020 Supreme Court case McGirt v. Oklahoma, which reaffirmed the sovereignty of Mvskoke territories.

Through a personal yet universal narrative, this production illuminates broken promises, perseverance, and the ongoing fight for Indigenous rights.

Commitment to Authenticity & Cultural Engagement

Both productions were developed in collaboration with Mvskoke leaders, artists, and historians to ensure accuracy, respect, and authenticity. By directly engaging with the Mvskoke community, the Springer Theatre aims to foster meaningful connections and deeper understanding of Indigenous history and culture.

In addition to the performances, the Springer Theatre will host workshops, panels, and post-show discussions, allowing audiences to explore Mvskoke traditions, language, and history in greater depth. These events will inspire dialogue and bridge cultural understanding within the community.
