New Medicare Prescription Drug Changes Confusing Everyone—Not Just Seniors

Jul 01, 2025 ● By Paul Da Costa

Even pharmacists, doctors, and insurance agents are scratching their heads over the latest Medicare prescription drug plan changes. While the infamous “Donut Hole” is technically gone, it’s been replaced with a $590 deductible that must be met before your plan starts covering preferred brand, non-preferred, or specialty medications.

Many seniors are now facing unexpected hardship as formularies and co-pays have shifted. What used to be $0 in 2024 might now come with that steep deductible plus a 24% co-pay on the total medication cost.

Why the change?
Medicare insurance companies have adjusted their plans to offset reduced reimbursement rates from Medicare. Unfortunately, that means more people are discovering that their medications are either no longer covered—or have been moved to higher-cost tiers.

But here’s the good news:

You do have options.

If your current plan isn’t working for you—whether due to cost, coverage, or provider network—you may qualify for another plan that better fits your needs.
