Honoring Courage: The National Ranger Memorial at Fort Benning

Jul 01, 2025 ● By Desi Phillips

Tucked away on the grounds of Fort Benning—just minutes from downtown Columbus—is a place of solemn beauty, deep history, and unwavering honor: the National Ranger Memorial. Since its dedication in 1992, this sacred site has stood as a tribute to the extraordinary service and sacrifice of the U.S. Army Rangers—our nation’s most elite soldiers.

For locals, the Memorial is more than a landmark—it’s a living part of our community’s story. Rooted in the red clay and pine forests of West Georgia, it stands as a reminder of the legacy forged right here. And now more than ever, the National Ranger Memorial Foundation is inviting the community to discover it, honor it, and help ensure it endures for generations to come.

A Living Tribute to the Ranger Spirit

The Memorial is a powerful sight: etched granite markers, symbolic pathways, and inscriptions that honor Rangers from World War II through today’s Global War on Terror. The names engraved along the Ranger Memorial Walk are not just soldiers—they’re fathers, sons, brothers, and neighbors. Many trained, served, and gave all right here at Fort Benning.

Visitors often describe the experience as humbling. It’s not just a walk through history—it’s a walk alongside it. You feel the weight of the sacrifices made. And as you stand before the bronze Ranger statue, you gain a deeper understanding of courage, loyalty, and brotherhood.

The site also includes the Ranger Hall of Fame, honoring those whose leadership and valor have shaped American military history. Many of these heroes—and their families—call the Columbus area home.

Columbus: A Community with Ranger Roots

Columbus has always had a close relationship with Fort Benning and the Rangers who serve there. The sound of cadence on early mornings, the sight of a tan beret in a local restaurant—these are everyday reminders of the heroes among us.

Yet many local residents still don’t know about the Ranger Memorial. Unlike the National Infantry Museum or Arlington, it doesn’t have national visibility. The National Ranger Memorial Foundation (NRMF) is working to change that—with your help.

Beyond the Stone: Supporting Rangers and Their Families

The Foundation isn’t just preserving a monument—it’s investing in lives. Since its founding, the NRMF has awarded nearly $1 million in college scholarships to Rangers, their children, and their spouses.

These scholarships do more than reduce financial burden—they send a powerful message of gratitude and continuity. In 2025 alone, the Foundation will distribute $50,000 to help the next generation of leaders pursue their goals.

Every dollar raised through donations, sponsorships, and merchandise sales goes directly into programs that serve the Ranger community.

Why It Matters

Supporting the Ranger Memorial is about more than preserving stone and bronze—it’s about preserving legacy. It’s about honoring those who fought in Normandy, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and on missions we may never know about. It’s about standing with the families who carry the weight of service every day.

Columbus has always stood proudly with its military community. Now, we invite you to stand with us again—for the Rangers who live here, serve here, and protect us.

Come visit. Come honor. Come support.
Together, we can ensure that the spirit of the Ranger—courage, loyalty, and selfless service—continues to inspire generations to come.
